The Week Ahead – Week Commencing 10 August 2026
It was a volatile week again for financial markets last week, with sentiment seeming to swing on an almost daily basis, but ultimately finished up strongly, with major bourses hitting record levels again.
The Middle East remained a key focus for traders, with Oil dropping substantially earlier in the week as hope continued to increase that the Strait of Hormuz may reopen to shipping in the coming weeks. However, details still remain uncertain, and hostilities have continued across the region, which has seen Oil prices rally in the last few sessions.
It was a relatively light data week for the markets, with the main focus on US employment numbers, which were highlighted by a big miss for Non-Farm Payrolls on Friday.
The Week Ahead is another relatively quiet one on the macroeconomic calendar, with the northern hemisphere trading centres entering holiday season. However, inflation numbers out of the US will provide a strong focus, as will the latest rate call from the Reserve Bank of Australia.
Here is our usual day-by-day breakdown of the major risk events this week:
Monday
It is a quiet start to the calendar week on Monday, with little of note scheduled across all three trading sessions. However, markets are again expected to remain volatile as traders react to geopolitical updates from over the weekend.
Tuesday
The calendar kicks into gear on Tuesday, with the Asian session providing the major focus. Japanese markets are on holiday, which could see liquidity reduced through the day, but the main focus will be on Australian markets in the afternoon session, when the Reserve Bank of Australia makes its latest interest rate announcement. The London session has little again scheduled, while the New York day sees the release of the US Existing Home Sales data.
Wednesday
The first two sessions of the day on Wednesday are relatively quiet on the event calendar. However, probably the biggest data release of the week is due shortly after the US open, when the US CPI data is released. This will be a major focus for Fed rate expectations, especially after Friday’s big employment number miss.
Thursday
Thursday is a bit busier on the calendar. There is nothing on the agenda in the Asian session; however, UK markets will be in focus shortly after the European open, with the key GDP data due out alongside a raft of other updates. The New York session sees the second major inflation update of the week for US markets, this time in the form of the PPI numbers, which are released at the same time as the weekly unemployment claims figures.
Friday
Friday will see Australian markets again in focus early in the Asian session, when RBA Governor Michele Bullock speaks in Canberra. There is little of note scheduled in the London session; however, there is more US data due again once New York opens, with both the Retail Sales numbers set to be released before the Preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment and Inflation Expectations figures are released.Disclaimer:
